American Steel Products Leading the Industry in a Variety of Rolling Mill Lines
ASP Provides Hot & Cold Rolling Mills for Businesses World-Wide
For over 60 years, ASP’s rolling mills provided the industry with high production 2-high, 4-high and cluster mills. ASP’s rolling mill housings are fabricated from forged alloy steel allowing for high separating forces and high safety factors.
All rolls are made from forged, high chrome molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium; vacuum heat-treated and tempered to the highest consistent U.S. Standards for minimum wear and long life. High reductions per pass and close tolerances held regardless of strip variation are due to ASP’s Automatic Gauge Control (AGC), ASP’s Direct Gap Control (DGC) and ASP’s full floating thickness gauge and hydraulic screw-downs.
AGC is computer controlled with hydraulic low-friction cylinders, servo-valves, and high-resolution linear encoders. PC and PLC based controls are used for implementing proven DGC and thickness gauge control for final thickness monitoring and control. The control console is an operator friendly HMI touch screen for digital and analog data display.
Six-high rolling mills are becoming more common throughout the world. It was discovered that if the ends of the intermediate rolls are tapered, rolling is considerably improved. The start of each taper should be set just inside of the strip edge. In this manner, the work rolls are supported over the strip. This ensures that there are no bending forces on the work roll ends, which causes the work rolls to bend and over roll the strip edges. By not over rolling or reducing the strip edges, a level or flat product is produced. This also prevents an elongation or wavy edge affect.
The advantage of an ASP designed 6-high rolling mill is the design of a small diameter work roll with zero crown making the work rolls easy to grind straight. Quick, easy to replace small work rolls by hand or small fixture, as no coil cart or crane are necessary. The mills built by ASP are equipped with sliding gear type universals that drive the intermediate rolls. These universals provide a precision, uniform, circular motion, which not only produces a superior finish, but also is extremely beneficial when rolling light gauge materials. Controlled tooth curvature allows for large angles and a wide range of thicknesses with high torque and constant velocity.
In addition to the sliding universals, a DGC system is provided at the end of the work rolls. This gauge system, working in conjunction with the external thickness gauge, allows uniformity and extremely accurate tolerances.
In conjunction with laterally adjustable intermediate rolls, hydraulic roll bend can also be provided. This is used when extreme accuracy is required across wide strip material. This type of roll bend adds greater control, which further prevents oil canning or edge wave. The ASP 6-high can be made in any number of configurations. ASP has converted standard 4-high rolling mills to 6-high rolling mills to improve strip surface, flatness, gauge accuracy, increased reductions, reduced roll cost, reduced grinding cost, and faster roll changes. The conversion allows the standard 4-high rolling mill design to roll lighter gauges without the many deficiencies of a 4-high rolling mill.
